<image:caption>I completed medical school, not just with a degree, but a deeper sense of purpose and with refined values. It had become absolutely disheartening to see the frequent indifference to reading and the occasional anti-intellectualism in my Christian communities. You would think that the people who profess, “God has a book”, would be the most passionate readers and advocates for great literature. But there is a great discrepancy and the reasons are multifaceted (as well as beyond the scope of this article for now).</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love to read! It’s one of the greatest joys of mine, but it wasn’t always that way. I remember rushing home after school every weekday afternoon as a young child to watch Pokémon. I loved the first generation of the show, the trading cards and the video games. Reading was like a chore back then and I don’t know very many kids who enjoy doing chores. In primary school and junior high, reading was an expression of obedience. My parents and teachers want me to do it, I didn’t want to be rude, so I read. Admittedly, and ashamedly, sometimes I read for the gratification of being perceived as smart, but I certainly didn’t delight in reading at that time. In high school and during my early college years, reading was now simply a tool to help gain knowledge and understanding about relevant topics.</image:caption>

<image:caption>But then, medical school and Pastor John Piper happened. I learned from experience mostly, as well as through guidance in sermons, that reading was a means to facilitate personal growth and spiritual maturity, an instrument of joy and comfort during distressing times, and a way to shape our perspectives about the world and our daily experiences. Finally, and most importantly, I learned that reading is an indispensable means to knowing, rejoicing in, and glorifying God, the ultimate of all ends. The latter revelation of the mind came at a perfect time and accorded with the transforming desires of my heart. In retrospect, I believe that this was a match made in heaven (literally) through God’s providence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>But after accepting and failing at several reading challenges from friends, I knew something was wrong. At first, I was in denial and blamed my failures elsewhere, “You’re a business major and I’m in bio-chem. Of course, you have more time to read!” But deep within my inner being, I knew that this response was shallow. The mid-to-late college years were a time for me to confront many things about myself including, but not limited to, my motivation for reading and my poor reading habits. “Is there a greater value to reading that I’m neglecting?”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>O how I thank Christ for my early ignorance and His grace the enlightens my heart! My passion for reading isn’t used as an index of superiority but rather to be shared with other that they may have joy with me. My frustration over my failed attempts to promote Christian literacy, education and provide the tools for thoughtful reasoning and discourse within the lives of my people didn’t ultimately result in me disowning them but instead produced gratitude that I could be a part of a grand work. It is a reminder of my own shortcomings, for the God-sized space in my heart, once inadequately occupied by Pokémon and progressively selfish ambitions has now been replaced by the glory of God’s grace, out of which flows a passion for reading and teaching. <image:caption>There was something happening to me at that time which I’m still trying to find the words to explain. Nevertheless, I started to choose to read, not just because someone else wanted me to or because it helped with a class but because of this inner compulsion. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I enjoyed it! Priorities in my life started to shift and reading had become such an ingrained habit that there’s even an incident (or two) when I took a book into a movie theatre (ask my wife for the hilarious details). However, with these new desires came new temptations, particularly the desire to make reading an end in itself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Author: James K. Dew Jr. & Paul M. Gould Genre: Christian literature, Non-fiction, Philosophy Estimated Required Reading Level: B1 In my review of the book of the month for March 2021, I stated how I considered apologetics to be one of the most underappreciated and least engaged fields of study among the general Christian populace. In retrospect, I’m glad that I was graced with the foresight not to definitively settle on the superlative because the field of philosophy is well worthy of consideration.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Author: John Piper Genre: Christian literature, non-fiction, theology Estimated Required Reading Level: B2 Here, in The Pleasure of God: Meditations on God’s Delight in Being God, author John Piper aims to convince the reader that God delights most in Himself, which in turn overflows to the benefit of those who are to rejoice and delight in Him. A cursory glance at that idea may make it appear strange or even unseemly, yet careful contemplation, as well as exploration of scripture, inevitably ends in a similar discovery.</image:caption>

God’s love isn’t difficult to understand”, announced obstinately by an associate of mine as he glanced at the title of the book in my hands. Retrospectively, his response shouldn’t have been as alarming to me as it was. Even as Western societies become increasingly secularized and pluralistic, it remains culturally acceptable (and even popular) to affirm that God, if He exists, possesses love as a central attribute.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I plan to write books someday on a variety of topics. But I’ll probably never have to write one explaining the basis for this website because it’s already been done. I chose this book, Think: The Life of the Mind and The Love of God, as the first published book review for two reasons. Firstly, I love Pastor John Piper! His sermons and writings have had a great influence on my life and thinking. And secondly, although “Think” isn’t his most influential neither his most theologically in-depth book, its message and content highlight a lot of the reasons for this ministry.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Apologetics is, in my estimation, one of the most underappreciated and least engaged fields of study among the general Christian populace. Resultantly, there is an unfortunate abundance of Christians who possess unaddressed doubts about their faith and are ineffective (or hesitant) in sharing their beliefs.</image:caption>
